Bulimba Bulls Hockey Academy

Bulimba Bulls Academy 2019

A skill development program for junior Bulimba Bull players who desire to improve their game and prepare themselves for the transition to higher grades or even representative teams.
Age group: 10 – 15.

Must be committed to signing up as a junior with the Bulimba Bulls junior teams (U11, U13 or J2) in 2019.

Must have played at least one season of competition hockey (i.e. understand the game’s concepts such as rules, position roles and tactics). A separate Bulimba Bulls program for beginners will also run early in 2019.
Both boys and girls are encouraged to nominate. All field positions and goal keepers are welcome.

Each participant must have a strong desire to improve and a willingness and commitment to train hard. Skills level, or past achievements in hockey, are not a criterium for entry to the Bulimba Bulls Academy.
The program is funded entirely by participants and payment for the training is to be paid in full, or payment plan commenced, prior to the first training session.

Cost: $150.00.

The academy cost is in addition to Bulimba Bull membership and playing fees for 2019.

Timing of Training Sessions
One-hour turf sessions (half field) will be held on Tuesday evenings between 5 and 6 pm (running concurrently with J1 training).

Ten hours of formal training is scheduled:
• Five weekly sessions commencing 5 February through to 5 March
• Five monthly sessions on 2 April, 7 May, 4 June, July (TBC) and 6 August.

Academy training is additional to the weekly team training sessions and is not a substitute. It is expected that players will show their commitment to their regular training sessions.
Training Format
The intent of the academy is to maintain a maximum coach to player ratio of approximately 6 to 1.

The academy will focus on small group exercises with intensive tuition. Grouping will be dynamic and sessions may be grouped and coached by:
• age
• skill level or
• team role (striker, midfield, defender, goal keeper).

Additional benefits of being a Bulimba Bull Academy Player
All Academy players will receive:
• A Bulimba Bulls Academy training t-shirt
• Coaches will be mentors during the season taking an active interest in their player’s development and performances.
• Invites to senior or J1 games – including listening to the dressing room talks
• Periodic invites to train with higher grades (when appropriate)
• End of year recognition of player’s achievements

Bulimba Bulls Coaches
The Academy Coaches include both past and present players, with current or previous National Hockey League experience and current representative coaches. Collectively they represent the roles of striker, midfielder, defender, and goal keeper.

As many of the coaches are still actively playing, it is expected the juniors will quickly form bonds with these coaches and be motivated to replicate their achievements. The coaches include:

• Michael Francis
• Justin Douglas
• Harrison Farrell
• Steve Lambert

Nominations close on 25 January 2019.

Additional information can be found in the term and conditions, including a Q & A or by contacting Tim Armstrong.

Founded 1944

The vital but now almost forgotten link to a healthy growth rate for the sport of hockey, Primary schools, was instrumental in building the initial strength of the Bulimba Hockey Club. The Sports Master of the Bulimba State School, Mr. Harry Quinn, purchased twenty-two (ex Army Disposal) hockey Sticks. They were the old English style with the long hook, and while they were worse for wear with worn hooks from being used on the gravel bull rings, those sticks played an important role in establishing a stranglehold for the sport in Bulimba.
